The Balonne River is the lifeblood of this agricultural community, and its ebbs and flows have a major impact on the people who live and work in the region.

The region experienced major flood events in 1950,1956, 1975, twice in 1983, 1996, 2010, twice in 2011 and 2012. All of the heights of the water level are recorded on the flood height marker situated on the Balonne River down from the Explore Centre.
